Scozzari Mystery

There still seems to be a mystery over how our surname was changed from Scozzari (or Scozzaro) to Adamo. For the sake of consistency, I will refer to our grandparents as Adamo, though as I will show, their actual surname was Scozzari or Scozzaro.

I recall that my father, Philip Scozzari Adamo, son of Giuseppe (Joe) Scozzari Adamo, had said to me that Uncle Frank, Dr. Frank Scozzari Adamo, had changed all the family's names to Adamo. As I remember, my dad said that there were two Joes in the family and one was known as Joe Adamo while the other was referred to as Joe Scozzari. Since the middle name was Adamo, the family, in particular, Dr. Adamo decided to legally change the surname to Adamo.

Emily Tannone, grand-daughter to Giuseppina Adamo, sister of Giuseppe (Joe) Scozzari Adamo (see above), said that her maiden name was Scozzari and that her grandfather most likely was Adamo. She wasn't clear on her grandfather's, but she distinctly remember that her grandmother had said that her maiden name was Scozzari. Likewise, my wife, when she talked to Harry Adamo, son of Pietro Scozzari Adamo, he said that his grandmother's maiden name was also Scozzari. This would be very odd, that is, one sister's maiden name, Giuseppina, was Scozzari and a sister-in-law's maiden name, wife of Pietro Scozzari Adamo, was also Scozzari.

Facts

Fact 1 Although my father had a baptismal certificate in the name of Philip Scozzari Adamo, he had another, earlier, Certificate of Baptism, showing that he was baptized as Phillipo Scozaro.

Fact 2 To verify the two records I had, I visited the Historian at Sacred Heart Church. I asked if she could find my father's baptismal record either as Adamo or Scozzari. There were no records for any Adamos, though there were records for Scozzaros. To certify the name on my father's certificate, she completed the Certificate of Baptism for my father, as shown here. As shown, my father was baptized only two months after birth as Phillipo Scozaro. One of the sponsors was Petro Scozaro, who may have been my father's uncle.

Both names were spelled with one 'z' and with an 'o.'

Fact 3. Tampa phone directories tell an interesting story. The following was retrieved from the phone directories found at the Tampa Library.

(There were 4 entries as Scozzara, but none of the names seemed familiar and most likely not related).

In 1920

ADAMO FRANK S (Euphemia), Physician and Surgeon 1922 1/2 7th av, h same, Tel 71-463
Scozzari Frank, lab, r 2214 5th av

Scozzari Vincenzo, barber, r 1422 5th av

This is the last year when a Scozzari was listed in the Tampa phone book and, at the same time, the first year an Adamo, Dr. Frank Adamo was listed in the Tampa phone directory. You will notice that Dr. Adamo office and home is at the same location as his parents, Giuseppe and Maria Scozzari.

In 1921

Adamo Frank S (Euphemia), phys 2207 1/2 7th av, h 816 S. Edison av.
Adamo Lily, cigarmkr, r 2105 19th

You will notice that in 1921, Dr. Adamo moved his practice a block away from his parent's former address. Again, there was no Scozzaris listed.

In 1922

Adamo Frank, student, r 2105 19th
Adamo Frank S (Euphemia), phys 2207 1/2 7th av, h 816 S. Edison av.
Adamo Jose, cigarmkr, r 2214 5th av
Adamo Lilly, student Tampa Business College, r 2105 19th
Adamo Philip, r 816 S. Edison av

Lily decided to go to college. Philip Adamo, my father was listed and apparently lived with Dr. Adamo during 1922. For some reason, my father was not listed before or after this date. Perhaps he left for Chicago during 1922. Also, note that there is another Frank Adamo. Could this be the Dr. Francis (Frank) Hunter Adamo from New York. He would have been 18 in 1922.
