As a young boy, I used to sit down by the radio in our living room or turn on
the radio in my bedroom to listen to Badge 714 (later to be known as Dragnet),
Gangbusters, The Lone Ranger, Mr. and Mrs. North, The Shadow Knows, Suspense and
of course Gunsmoke. There were others, but I don't recall the names.
During the early 1950's the only TV was at my Dad's boss ranch. About 2
or 3 times a year, we would go out to the ranch and watch the only station
available, Channel 17 (if I remember correctly), ABC from St. Louis. It seems
they only showed boxing. Finally in 1952 or 54, Springfield, IL got a
station, Channel 20 and our parent's bought a Dumont TV. The very first
show I watched was Mr. and Mrs. North. To watch the actual actors on TV was
amazing, having only imagined what they looked like on radio.
Like most kids today, I also had to sit and watch TV during dinner.
Since the TV was in the living room, I asked if I could sit at my dad's desk in
the foyer. During the early evening, I watched Gene Autry, Roy Rogers,
Hopalong Cassidy and, of course, The Howdy Doody show, and a science fiction show
called Captain Video. I was so amazed by Captain Video and space flight,
particularly when the robot was involved with defending off the invaders.
Below are some links to web sites with information on some of my
favorite TV shows.
